The Mainz Police Headquarters is announcing increased traffic checks and prevention measures from September 16 to 22, 2026. E-scooters, particularly within the Mainz city area, will be a focus of these efforts. The occasion is the Europe-wide ROADPOL Safety Days. The announcement published today concerns the enforcement of existing regulations.

What is announced for the action week

  • Period: Wednesday, September 16, to Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
  • Area: Measures in the jurisdiction of the Mainz Police Headquarters; special emphasis on e-scooters in the city area.
  • Other target group: Pedestrians, including those in the vicinity of school routes, crossings, and bus stops.

The police announcement from September 15 mentions both checks and education. For scooter riders, issues include permitted traffic areas, carrying additional passengers, and insurance coverage. An assessment of the upcoming action is not yet available.

The European framework

ROADPOL itself confirms the action week and is focusing on pedestrian safety in 2026. September 17 is designated as a special target day: the goal for this day is to have as few deaths as possible in European road traffic. This is the stated campaign goal, not a result that has already been achieved.

The Mainz announcement specifies this framework for the region. It cannot be inferred from this that every German city is planning identical e-scooter checks. For other locations, the respective local announcements are authoritative.

Three rules for everyday life

We have also verified the following points based on the published regulatory text:

  1. Use the correct traffic area: Within built-up areas, Section 10 of the eKFV names cycle paths, shared pedestrian and cycle paths, the cycle section of separated paths, cycle lanes, and bicycle streets. If these are missing, roadways or traffic-calmed areas are intended. A regular sidewalk is not automatically permitted; official exceptions are possible.
  2. Do not take a second person: Section 8 of the eKFV prohibits the transport of passengers. A short distance does not make it a permitted ride.
  3. Check vehicle and insurance: Section 2 of the eKFV requires, among other things, an appropriate operating permit and a valid insurance sticker. A sticker alone does not replace the other requirements for the vehicle.

Our assessment: Consideration remains important after the week

The practical reason for this is to consciously review your own daily route: where does the cycle path end, where do pedestrians cross, and where does it get narrow? Plan extra time for such places instead of using a sidewalk as a shortcut. The rules apply even after the control week has ended.
