AI Note: This post was created and revised with AI based on our own test videos. The embedded videos document the rides and impressions of Survival Masters.
The Segway ZT3 Pro D impressed us more in practice than we initially expected. In particular, the suspension, large tires, and powerful drive make for an enjoyable ride on uneven paths. At the same time, our five videos show specific weaknesses: noises on the test vehicle, a steering feel that takes some getting used to, and a boost that does not remain available continuously under heavy load.
This report combines our videos from February 18, 20, 22, and 23, as well as April 8, 2025. We are looking at the tested ZT3 Pro D in the software state at that time. It is neither the larger GT3 D nor the Ninebot MAX G3. Subsequent modifications or announced tuning attempts are not part of the results described here.

Our findings on the Segway ZT3 Pro D
- Comfort: pleasant suspension and 11-inch tires, especially on uneven paths.
- Climbing performance: powerful drive even without boost; at the "Doppelbaum" we completed two ascents with a rider swap.
- Off-road: convincing on the forest paths we rode, with limits in deep leaves and loose surfaces.
- Range: around 38 km mentioned towards the end of the tour; about 40 km is the final estimate including the rest of the return journey.
- Weaknesses: creaking and rattling, the need to kick-start, and a boost that occasionally cuts out.
Unboxing: good first impression and practical details
Right from unpacking, we like the powerful, independent appearance. The deck feels generous, the handlebars fit our riders well, and the folding mechanism can be followed in the video. The external charger and the option to operate the throttle with a thumb or a twisting motion are also positive aspects.
The first surprise concerns the steering. Due to the fork being offset forward, it feels unusual when pushing and at low speeds. We initially describe it as somewhat spongy. In the riding test, we get along with it better, but we continue to mention the tendency to steer more sharply. Anyone switching from a scooter with a different setup should take their time getting used to it.
In the unboxing, we update the software and set up the scooter in the Segway app. After further settings, our vehicle displays 22 km/h in Sport mode. This information describes the test vehicle's display; a separately measured GPS top speed for the ZT3 cannot be derived from this.

Riding test: powerful acceleration and pleasant suspension
In the second video, we ride along with a VMAX VX4. The ZT3 feels distinctly lively when accelerating, especially with the boost activated. We also like the suspension during the ride. For us, the overall package feels significantly more mature than the then-current promotional price suggested.
In a spontaneous comparison, we feel the braking effect is powerful. However, we do not measure a braking distance in meters. The charging port is easily accessible. Regarding the lighting, it is noticeable that our model has front turn signals; we miss having rear turn signals. A systematic night light test is not included in this series.
What the comparison with the VX4 indicates
We swap the vehicles between the riders, but we start with significantly different battery levels. The ZT3 has more remaining charge than the VX4. Rider weight, starting speed, and surface also influence the attempts. The scene therefore primarily shows how surprisingly powerful the Segway feels to us. It does not provide a standardized ranking of the two models.
On the unpaved incline, the difference between normal riding and boost becomes clear. With the extra push, the ZT3 initially climbs faster, but during the course of a test, the boost ends and the pace slows down. You can see this from 18:30 in the riding test. High short-term power and continuously available climbing performance are two different things here.

Off-road test: lots of fun, but not limitless propulsion
On forest paths, we like the ZT3 Pro particularly well. The large tires and the chassis absorb bumps comfortably. After switching riders, we feel the impacts on the VX4 are partly stronger in the back. This is our subjective impression on this route, not a measurement of the damping.
However, in deep leaves and between branches, the scooters reach their limits. The ZT3 also gets stuck or needs support to move forward. The need to kick-start is particularly annoying then: reaching sufficient starting speed for the motor to engage on difficult ground or on a hill is significantly more cumbersome than on asphalt.
In addition, there are audible plastic and rattling noises. These are noticeable during the forest ride and are mentioned again in the later range test. The heavy use of our model is part of this observation. The videos do not definitively clarify which specific component causes the noises.
In this comparison, the battery levels also remain different. This does not diminish our positive impression of the ZT3, but it does limit statements about which scooter would be stronger under identical conditions.

Climbing test at the "Doppelbaum": strong even without boost
For the separate hill test, we charge the vehicles beforehand. On the ZT3, approximately 95 percent is displayed immediately before the attempt after a short ride has already taken place. We estimate the temperature in the video to be about 5 °C. The rider weights mentioned are approximately 55 kg and 75–80 kg.
We ride up the "Doppelbaum" twice with a rider swap. The actual ascents start without boost. The ZT3 performs exceptionally well, reaching around 20 km/h according to the display on many sections. Even on the steeper final section, it keeps moving and convinces us with powerful propulsion.
During additional attempts on the steep section, the boost switches off again quickly several times. Nevertheless, the scooter reaches approximately 19 km/h with the lighter rider in one starting attempt according to the video. The scene begins from 10:10. We do not measure the gradient of this section; an exact percentage incline cannot be derived from this.
We do not experience a complete shutdown during the two ascents here. In our discussion, we suspect a possible temperature influence on the boost, but we do not prove either overheating or its exact cause through measurements. The test shows its hill-climbing capability under these conditions and leaves the cause of the boost limitation open.

Range test: about 38 km mentioned, estimated at about 40 km
For the longer tour in April, we ride the ZT3 together with a Trittbrett Hilde. The Segway is fully charged overnight. We use the highest riding mode and switch riders on the way. With approximately 75 kg and 95 kg including luggage, we estimate an average load of around 85 kg.
The route consists of roads, forest paths, inclines, and a few more demanding passages. We also mention strong wind. At the beginning, we estimate the temperature at about 15–16 °C with expected warming. The video does not provide continuous temperature measurement or a documented tire pressure.
GPS and app show different distances
We compare the route with GPS. In doing so, we account for about one kilometer that we rode before the recording started. After about 18 km, we mention 50 percent battery, and after about 28 km, about 25 percent.
Later, the Segway app shows 29 km, while we derive about 32 km from 31 GPS kilometers plus the previously ridden distance. This leaves about 14–15 percent battery. We discuss this discrepancy from 20:36 in the range test. We therefore do not use the app display alone as the final result.
What is actually documented at the end
Toward the end, we mention around 38 km. With the red battery indicator, the speed increasingly drops to about 18–19 km/h and later briefly to about 15 km/h. The scooter is still moving but has noticeably less power than at the beginning.
In the final section, we say that we will bring the tour to about 40 km with the return leg, or that we consider this distance feasible. A final GPS overlay after a complete standstill is not documented in this video. The clear classification is therefore: around 38 km mentioned in the video, about 40 km as the final estimate. You can watch the conclusion for yourself from 33:00.
We are satisfied with the result for our mixed route. As a fixed commute without recharging, we would still not plan for that last reserve: power drops even before the end, and other rider weights, temperatures, or inclines change the range.

Technical specifications: Manufacturer values considered separately
Segway lists a 597 Wh battery, 500 W nominal power, 1,600 W peak power, and 20 km/h top speed for the ZT3 Pro D. Additionally, there are 11-inch tubeless tires, dual telescopic front suspension, rear suspension, and disc brakes on both wheels. The stated weight is 29.7 kg with a maximum payload of 120 kg.
The advertised ranges of up to 70 km at 15 km/h or 56 km at 20 km/h are generated under the respective manufacturer test conditions. They are not the results of our mixed tour. The complete conditions and current equipment specifications can be found on the Segway ZT3 Pro D product page.
Who is the ZT3 Pro D suitable for?
We are primarily impressed by the ZT3 as a powerful scooter for mixed paths. Its suspension makes uneven sections more pleasant, and we like the climbing performance even without constant boost. On the other hand, anyone who climbs many stairs daily or rides very long distances without charging options should critically evaluate the weight and range in relation to their own everyday life.
Before buying, we would also pay attention to the steering feel, noises during a test ride, and starting behavior. Our positive conclusion refers to the rides shown and the price range at that time. It does not replace a long-term test after several thousand kilometers or a re-examination of later software versions.
